You'll get invited to our Meetups as soon as they're scheduled!
The number one priority of this meetup will be discussing and working directly on ways to grow a strong, well connected presence for Youth Rights activism in the NYC area. Each person that attends will probably have their own set of priorities as far as specific issues go. This event will be very welcoming of any discussion of what matters most to each of us. Although, to advance the effort to produce quality results the organizers of this event do go into it with a prioritized list of issues we think are most vital to the success of any of our efforts:
1. Student Rights & Student Centered Education
2. The Voting Age & Youth Civic/Political Participation
3. The Drinking Age & Efforts to Promote Safe and Responsible Drinking While Protecting The Rights of Young People
4. Self-Determination: Economic Rights & Self-Development of Young People, Options for Emancipation from Parents, Closing Behavior Modification Camps
5. Free Speech/Free Expression Issues, Including But Not Limited To: Internet Censorship; Ratings Systems for Music, Print, Film, Video Games, and Other Media; and Movie and Music venue restrictions.
6. Anti-Youth Attitudes: The Demonization of Youth in Popular Culture and Efforts to Infantilize All Americans
Thankfully there is no curfew law in NYC. We will probably work against the defacto daytime curfew which allows the NYPD to detain and question anyone who simply "looks young" during school time hours, but that is a subset of Student Rights.
If you think we've left something important out of our list, definitely let us know and we will be happy to add it. This meetup is about helping each of us get more done in support of Youth Rights than we could on our own. So it's your list, and your Meetup, as much as it is any of ours.
