The National Youth Rights Association (NYRA) exists to promote and protect the rights of young people, particularly teenagers. Our goals include lowering the voting age, lowering the drinking age, ending curfew laws, defending students' rights, preserving young people's constitutional rights, and much more!
We have chapters all over the country working on all sorts of youth rights issues, including preventing and repealing curfew laws, getting rid of unconstitutional school rules, and getting stores to repeal any policies dictating the number of teens who may enter at a time.
Our membership consists mostly of students in middle school, high school, and college, as well as some older who have outgrown most or all age restrictions but feel like today's young citizens deserve better. There are NYRA members of all political ideologies, ethnic and religious backgrounds, and lifestyles.
Our group here in Montgomery County will be primarily concerned with the voting age, students' rights, and correcting any stores with unnecessary limits on teens entering (such policies are illegal in Maryland but some places don't seem to care). Activities include holding meetings so local supporters can meet and plan, and appearing at public events to raise awareness of our issues and find more supporters. This group shall be a "companion" to the legendary NYRA-DC chapter.
